ICYMI: Last One Picked - Millennials Fear Being Left Out - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times: "ou’re in the process of organizing a fundraising event. Do you have your venue and entertainment booked? Check. Is your fundraising team hard at work engaging donors and driving up attendance? Check. Are you taking advantage of FOMO?

FOMO, or “fear of missing out,” is a colloquialism among Millennials, according to author Darian Rodriguez-Heyman and KC Fox, senior marketing manager at Eventbrite. It might also be used as a means of driving youth toward your next event, the duo said during a session at the recent Association of Fundraising Professionals’ international conference in Boston."

Speaking at the Association of Fundraising Professionals International Fundraising Conference, Kerry-Ann Powell of The Harvest Group discussed parts of the work that went into making the effort by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Foundation a success in its fundraising project to build a monument to the slain civil rights leader."

Copy Clinic: Communicating Coherently With Donors - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times: "Printed material can be used as a means of better connecting donors to a particular cause. Poorly done, however, organizational copy can create precisely the kinds of barriers that it is intended to eliminate.

During “Copy Clinic — Being More Creative in Communications with Supporters” at the recent AFP International Fundraising Conference in Boston, Stephen Pidgeon of Stephen Pidgeon Ltd. in Cheltenham, U.K., urged writers to focus on two things — come up with a concept and identify useful snippets. “If you don’t have a concept, don’t start writing because you’ll write to fill space,” Pidgeon said."

Bonks. Sorries. Thanks. And throwing up in my mouth. | Agents of Good

Bonks. Sorries. Thanks. And throwing up in my mouth. | Agents of Good: "When you say “thank you”, and mean it, it’s a beautiful expression. Your donor tingles and sparkles in all the good ways. And it also makes you tingle and sparkle. It feels good for them. And for you.

I get it. I’m all about the feelings. And I know not everyone is.

But here’s the thing, for me, in a session at #AFPFC, a presenter talked about how sometimes donors don’t want a relationship. I nodded.

He continued, saying sometimes donors may give and all they need is a positive customer service experience. I half nodded. Because I think that even if all they need is a positive customer experience, they still deserve an experience that exceeds their expectations. But I’m still half nodding. Okay, I can go with it.

And then he suggested that we may be spending too much time on “relationship fundraising for donors” who only need “transactional marketing for consumers”. That’s when I threw up a little in my mouth."

The AFP Blog

The AFP Blog: "Hope in Dark Times
These are dark times. We felt battered by the news from Brussels yesterday morning. Everywhere  we look we see evidence of man's inhumanity to man, the apparent crumbling of the sense of responsibility to work for a common good, towards shared objectives.

I know that, personally, I have struggled to make sense of this over the last few years, especially at times like this. It seems as if the values that I believe in have become irrelevant.

Yet I left Boston after this year's conference with a sense of renewed optimism, of hope and with a belief in the future. Why?

It was not just one thing. There was the commitment, passion and experience we heard and felt in the sessions. There was the reaching out and sharing with one another."

Kofi Annan, former secretary-general of the United Nations, used the proverb to help articulate his message of collaboration in philanthropy during his remarks at the opening general session of the annual Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) conference in Boston on Sunday.

Partnerships were a priority of Annan’s during his tenure with the U.N. The eighth United Nations Millennium Development Goal was to foster global collaboration on key issues. Annan said that he understood that to achieve its objectives the U.N. couldn’t go it alone. Assessments were made regarding what the U.N. could do, what it could do with others and what should be left to others. Members of the non-governmental organization and business community were brought in to participate."

Although the hospital’s expansion is warranted (the capital project includes plans for a neonatal intensive care unit and additional single-patient rooms for children with uncertain immune systems), the demolishing of Prouty as a tradeoff is seen as less so. The hospital’s plans to build over the sacred sanctuary are providing those who have personally benefitted from the serene oasis with anything but peace. In fact, since Children’s announcement, an impassioned group of volunteers has established Save the Prouty Garden, whose mission is to petition hospital administration and secure funds to save the healing landscape from being destroyed. Boston’s struggle with income segregation - The Boston Globe

Boston’s struggle with income segregation - The Boston Globe: "n one of the weekend’s final exercises, they gathered in a wooden lodge overlooking the lake and fielded a series of difficult questions about whether they’d ever been through a divorce in the family, or felt abandoned, or heard gunshots outside their homes.

To answer “yes,” the teens were told, they had to walk across a line on the floor. In some cases, a mix of kids from all three towns crossed over. But in others, it was mostly Lawrence kids who stepped over the line and turned to face their peers. The new friends, looking at each other across the divide, were shaken.

There were hugs afterward, said Kiah Vette, 15, of Lawrence, but there was not a lot of conversation. “Nobody wanted to see anyone cry again,” she said. “We didn’t want to relive that moment.”

Sydney Pensavalli, 14, of North Andover, was still affected months later. “Nothing unfortunate has really happened in my life,” she said. “I didn’t really think that kids my age, kids in my grade, kids that like the same things as me, could go through that — just 2 miles away from my house.”"

How Boston and Other American Cities Support and Sustain the Arts Funding for Cultural Nonprofits in Boston and 10 Other Metropolitan Centers

How Boston and Other American Cities Support and Sustain the Arts Funding for Cultural Nonprofits in Boston and 10 Other Metropolitan Centers: "At this January 21, 2016 Understanding Boston forum a new study commissioned by the Boston Foundation on how Boston and comparable cities support the arts was released and discussed. The study reflects earned income and contributed support, including funding from individuals, foundations, corporations and local government, and compares funding for the Boston area's nonprofit cultural organizations with 10 other American cities.  The study shows that only New York City has higher per capita contributed revenue for the art than Boston. However, the study also shows that Boston's arts organizations receive the least government funding per capita among the comparison cities and that Boston has relatively few foundations making grants to the arts. In 2016, the foundation has assets totaling $1.6 billion and a mandate to focus its philanthropic endeavors on Boston and the region.

Now, suddenly, you can’t turn around without coming across an organization or project bearing the Barr Foundation’s stamp of approval"
