The Accidental Interim President: Suffolk U. Board Meets Woman of Steel | Nonprofit Quarterly
The Accidental Interim President: Suffolk U. Board Meets Woman of Steel | Nonprofit Quarterly: "The strange public power struggle between the board and president of the nonprofit Suffolk University got a little stranger this week when the outgoing president of the board, Andrew Meyer, sent out a detailed memo that was obtained by the Boston Globe. The memo outlined his defense of the board against recent accusations by university president Margaret McKenna, including her charge that trustees have ignored her attempts to tackle the most basic of leadership functions such as updating the bylaws. Prior to McKenna’s arrival, the school vowed to accreditors that the process would be complete in 2014, so we really mean the most basic of nonprofit leadership functions."

How Boston and Other American Cities Support and Sustain the Arts Funding for Cultural Nonprofits in Boston and 10 Other Metropolitan Centers
How Boston and Other American Cities Support and Sustain the Arts Funding for Cultural Nonprofits in Boston and 10 Other Metropolitan Centers: "At this January 21, 2016 Understanding Boston forum a new study commissioned by the Boston Foundation on how Boston and comparable cities support the arts was released and discussed. The study reflects earned income and contributed support, including funding from individuals, foundations, corporations and local government, and compares funding for the Boston area's nonprofit cultural organizations with 10 other American cities. The study shows that only New York City has higher per capita contributed revenue for the art than Boston. However, the study also shows that Boston's arts organizations receive the least government funding per capita among the comparison cities and that Boston has relatively few foundations making grants to the arts. And what funding is available skews toward larger arts and culture organizations in this region."

Who's Behind the Barr Foundation?
Who's Behind the Barr Foundation?: "Although the Barr Foundation has given out more than $710 million since 1999, chances are you’ve never heard of it. Until around 2010, donations were largely made on the condition of anonymity. Now that grants are given openly, Barr’s influence is finally visible. Established 29 years ago by Amos and Barbara Hostetter, who founded Continental Cablevision, it started as a kitchen-table family operation: Amos handled the investments, and Barbara managed the programs. In 2016, the foundation has assets totaling $1.6 billion and a mandate to focus its philanthropic endeavors on Boston and the region.
Now, suddenly, you can’t turn around without coming across an organization or project bearing the Barr Foundation’s stamp of approval"

Boston’s Arts, Culture Nonprofits Lag Other Cities in Key Areas
massnonprofit news ::: "January 22, 2016 — Although Boston arts and cultural organizations raise funds from individuals at higher levels than those in 10 comparable cities across the country, small and mid-sized organizations do not receive significant foundation support, and Boston is the only metro area where federal support outweighs state and local funding, according to a report published yesterday by The Boston Foundation.
“The absence of robust foundation and government, involvement is as important as the missing dollars,” according to TDC, a Boston-based nonprofit management consulting and research firm that developed the report, How Boston and Other American Cities Support and Sustain the Arts."
