Bonks. Sorries. Thanks. And throwing up in my mouth. | Agents of Good

Bonks. Sorries. Thanks. And throwing up in my mouth. | Agents of Good: "When you say “thank you”, and mean it, it’s a beautiful expression. Your donor tingles and sparkles in all the good ways. And it also makes you tingle and sparkle. It feels good for them. And for you.

I get it. I’m all about the feelings. And I know not everyone is.

But here’s the thing, for me, in a session at #AFPFC, a presenter talked about how sometimes donors don’t want a relationship. I nodded.

He continued, saying sometimes donors may give and all they need is a positive customer service experience. I half nodded. Because I think that even if all they need is a positive customer experience, they still deserve an experience that exceeds their expectations. But I’m still half nodding. Okay, I can go with it.

And then he suggested that we may be spending too much time on “relationship fundraising for donors” who only need “transactional marketing for consumers”. That’s when I threw up a little in my mouth."

@AFPFC Best Of IMHO | Talisman Thinking Out Loud

@AFPFC Best Of IMHO | Talisman Thinking Out Loud: "Another Association of Fundraising Professionals international fundraising conference is behind us. Even from Australia, I learned by plugging into social media #AFPFC and following some great people who posted great content. Here’s my roundup and if you want to access fundraising conference handouts and slides click here.  If any of this inspires you to share your fundraising experience – submit your #afpfc 2017 speaker application before May 6!
This is important as we “talk” about 100% giving  and fundraising around Board tables and this research will prove what we’ve been saying and show the impact and importance of the Board recruitment, empowerment and giving.Tom Ahern @thattomahern tweeted:"

The AFP Blog

The AFP Blog: "Hope in Dark Times
These are dark times. We felt battered by the news from Brussels yesterday morning. Everywhere  we look we see evidence of man's inhumanity to man, the apparent crumbling of the sense of responsibility to work for a common good, towards shared objectives.

I know that, personally, I have struggled to make sense of this over the last few years, especially at times like this. It seems as if the values that I believe in have become irrelevant.

Yet I left Boston after this year's conference with a sense of renewed optimism, of hope and with a belief in the future. Why?

It was not just one thing. There was the commitment, passion and experience we heard and felt in the sessions. There was the reaching out and sharing with one another."

39 Ideas From AFPFC That Will Make You A Smarter Fundraiser in 2016 - Fired-Up Fundraising with Gail Perry: "The AFP International Conference is always a huge highlight of the year. And this year, I have to say that I thought it was the BEST ever!

Provocative and challenging ideas, smart presenters, and an appreciative, enthusiastic audience who soaked everything up.

Kumi Naidoo, the former head of Greenpeace, gave an inspirational, rabble-rousing keynote address that I will never forget.  (more on that next week!)

If you have never been to the AFP International Conference, this is a must-do for next year, when the 2017 conference will be in San Francisco. "

Bad Boards and Pushy Millennials: Fundraisers Share What Works Plus Their War Stories - The Chronicle of Philanthropy

Bad Boards and Pushy Millennials: Fundraisers Share What Works Plus Their War Stories - The Chronicle of Philanthropy: "n a session called "How to Survive Your Board," fundraisers drew caricatures of trustees who are difficult to deal with.

One conferencegoer drew a ghost — a board member who never shows up at meetings. Another drew a board member sleeping, and another drew a figure with a microscope, symbolizing a micromanager.

Alice Ferris and James Anderson, founding partners of GoalBusters Consulting, who led the session, gave several tips for how to deal with troublesome board members, including:"

Growth In Giving Database Offers Behavior Analysis - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times: "Finding answers to those questions and others were the goals of the Fundraising Effectiveness Project (FEP), a joint initiative between the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute and several nonprofit software providers. When Wilson “Bill” Levis, an affiliated scholar at the Urban Institute and Dr. Cathy Williams from AFP started the FEP in 2006, no one could have imagined that it would evolve into one of the largest philanthropic research studies in the world. It now includes a number of programs under the Growth In Giving initiative (GiG)."

Live From AFP: Donors Prove It’s All About Them - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times: "Passion about the cause was the top reason for giving in every age group except matures where they like being depended on more than being passionate about the cause. There was an as much as 29 percent difference between the age groups when it came to wanting to be depended on.

These are some of the results from the 2016 Donor Loyalty Study released during the annual Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) conference in Boston by software firm Abila. They surveyed during February 1,136 donors in the United States who said that they made at least one donation during the previous 12 months."

Live From AFP: Annan Pushes Philanthropic Collaboration - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times

Live From AFP: Annan Pushes Philanthropic Collaboration - The NonProfit TimesThe NonProfit Times: "If you wish to go quickly, according to an old African proverb, go alone. If you wish to go far, go together.

Kofi Annan, former secretary-general of the United Nations, used the proverb to help articulate his message of collaboration in philanthropy during his remarks at the opening general session of the annual Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) conference in Boston on Sunday.

Partnerships were a priority of Annan’s during his tenure with the U.N. The eighth United Nations Millennium Development Goal was to foster global collaboration on key issues. Annan said that he understood that to achieve its objectives the U.N. couldn’t go it alone. Assessments were made regarding what the U.N. could do, what it could do with others and what should be left to others. Members of the non-governmental organization and business community were brought in to participate."

Saving Prouty: A Community Divided over Healing Garden’s Future | Nonprofit Quarterly

Saving Prouty: A Community Divided over Healing Garden’s Future | Nonprofit Quarterly: "Despite all that, in late 2014, hospital leadership announced that the tree and the garden it has made home would stand no longer and instead would be the future site of a historic $1.5 billion capital project. Although the hospital’s expansion is warranted (the capital project includes plans for a neonatal intensive care unit and additional single-patient rooms for children with uncertain immune systems), the demolishing of Prouty as a tradeoff is seen as less so. The hospital’s plans to build over the sacred sanctuary are providing those who have personally benefitted from the serene oasis with anything but peace. In fact, since Children’s announcement, an impassioned group of volunteers has established Save the Prouty Garden, whose mission is to petition hospital administration and secure funds to save the healing landscape from being destroyed. Boston’s struggle with income segregation - The Boston Globe

Boston’s struggle with income segregation - The Boston Globe: "n one of the weekend’s final exercises, they gathered in a wooden lodge overlooking the lake and fielded a series of difficult questions about whether they’d ever been through a divorce in the family, or felt abandoned, or heard gunshots outside their homes.

To answer “yes,” the teens were told, they had to walk across a line on the floor. In some cases, a mix of kids from all three towns crossed over. But in others, it was mostly Lawrence kids who stepped over the line and turned to face their peers. The new friends, looking at each other across the divide, were shaken.

There were hugs afterward, said Kiah Vette, 15, of Lawrence, but there was not a lot of conversation. “Nobody wanted to see anyone cry again,” she said. “We didn’t want to relive that moment.”

Sydney Pensavalli, 14, of North Andover, was still affected months later. “Nothing unfortunate has really happened in my life,” she said. “I didn’t really think that kids my age, kids in my grade, kids that like the same things as me, could go through that — just 2 miles away from my house.”"

A Tipping Point: Shelters Face the Full-Cost Question in Massachusetts as Budget Dips | Nonprofit Quarterly

A Tipping Point: Shelters Face the Full-Cost Question in Massachusetts as Budget Dips | Nonprofit Quarterly: "Last week, in Massachusetts, the Coalition for Homeless Individuals presented lawmakers with findings from a survey, showing that the state Department of Housing and Community Development only pays 61 percent of the true costs of each of the 2,856 shelter bed for which it contracts. This means, of course, that 39 percent of the cost must be made up through fundraising. But many shelters have more beds than those for which they have contracts, and when you add in those beds, the contracts pay for 41 percent."
