Boston’s struggle with income segregation - The Boston Globe

Boston’s struggle with income segregation - The Boston Globe: "n one of the weekend’s final exercises, they gathered in a wooden lodge overlooking the lake and fielded a series of difficult questions about whether they’d ever been through a divorce in the family, or felt abandoned, or heard gunshots outside their homes.

To answer “yes,” the teens were told, they had to walk across a line on the floor. In some cases, a mix of kids from all three towns crossed over. But in others, it was mostly Lawrence kids who stepped over the line and turned to face their peers. The new friends, looking at each other across the divide, were shaken.

There were hugs afterward, said Kiah Vette, 15, of Lawrence, but there was not a lot of conversation. “Nobody wanted to see anyone cry again,” she said. “We didn’t want to relive that moment.”

Sydney Pensavalli, 14, of North Andover, was still affected months later. “Nothing unfortunate has really happened in my life,” she said. “I didn’t really think that kids my age, kids in my grade, kids that like the same things as me, could go through that — just 2 miles away from my house.”"

A Tipping Point: Shelters Face the Full-Cost Question in Massachusetts as Budget Dips | Nonprofit Quarterly

A Tipping Point: Shelters Face the Full-Cost Question in Massachusetts as Budget Dips | Nonprofit Quarterly: "Last week, in Massachusetts, the Coalition for Homeless Individuals presented lawmakers with findings from a survey, showing that the state Department of Housing and Community Development only pays 61 percent of the true costs of each of the 2,856 shelter bed for which it contracts. This means, of course, that 39 percent of the cost must be made up through fundraising. But many shelters have more beds than those for which they have contracts, and when you add in those beds, the contracts pay for 41 percent."
